THE FAIR CATCH STORY
“My childhood was anything but ordinary. Both of my birth parents were addicts, and at the age of 16, I emancipated myself. In high school, I was as messed up as it gets. The first three years were mostly spent in detention. I was a kid with zero direction, I lacked positive influences, and I never thought about my future after high school. I entered my senior year severely credit deficient and on a clear track to drop out. I was in trouble and I knew it. Once my friends started talking about plans for after graduation, something clicked. Being stuck in my small town as a high school dropout simply wasn’t the life I saw for myself and I knew I had to switch it up.
Thankfully, my senior year we also got a new high school counselor, Christina Mackey-Greene. Little did she know how much her role would shape my life forever. Knowing that things needed to change, I scheduled a meeting with Christina and my high school principal, Aaron Hansen. I told them my story and I asked if there was anything that I could do to get my life turning in the right direction. Together they formed a plan and the strings that they pulled blew my mind. The next few months were filled with credit recovery, letters of recommendation, getting denied from college, appealing the denial, deep talks, and tough love. Their efforts helped me get accepted into college, which forever changed the course of my life.
Flash forward several years and I have built a life that I love. I am married to the woman of my dreams, have an amazing group of friends, and have found success in my career. I have also stayed in contact with Christina, and my wife and I have grown close with her and her family. In November of 2022, I helped Christina surprise her family with a trip to Las Vegas to visit us. During this time, we reminisced about life and dreamed up ways of giving back. It was here that the Fair Catch Foundation was born.
Participating in sports was among the first of my positive communal experiences; however, as I grew older, I quickly realized that not all of us start from the same place. A lack of finances to purchase quality resources should not be a barrier for kids to participate and grow in their communities. We’re here to alleviate some of that burden.”
